The ear canal produces cerumen, a waxy oil known as earwax. This oil protects the ear from foreign particles, microorganisms, and dust.   Furthermore, it protects the ear canal from irritation caused by water.  Normally, excess earwax ends up in place before it is washed away.

Excessive production of earwax causes it to harden and block the ear.  As you try to clean the ears, you push the wax deeper, causing a blockage.

Causes of earwax buildup

Some people are more prone to produce excess earwax than others.  It is worth noting that excess doesn’t necessarily lead to blockage.  As a matter of fact, at-home removal turns out to be the most common cause of earwax blockage.  Using objects like bobby pins and cotton swabs in the ear canal is likely to push the wax deeper, causing a blockage.

Signs and symptoms of earwax buildup

The earwax differs in color, ranging from light yellow to dark brown.   Signs of earwax buildup include the following:

  • sudden or partial hearing loss, which is usually temporary
  • a feeling of fullness in the ear
  • earache
  • tinnitus, which is a ringing or buzzing in the ear

If neglected, earwax can lead to infection. Make sure you consult your doctor if you experience any of the symptoms below:

  • persistent hearing loss
  • severe pain in your ear
  • pain in your ear that doesn’t subside
  • drainage from your ear
  • dizziness
  • fever
  • coughing
  • an odor coming from your ear

Irrigating the ear is one of the most popular ways to remove earwax buildup.   However, you should never attempt to do it if you have had a medical procedure done on the ear or you have an ear injury.  Irrigation of a ruptured eardrum is likely to cause an infection or hearing loss.

There are countless over-the-counter solutions to clean the ears, but this article presents an effective DIY remedy which is far superior.  It is an all-natural remedy, consisting of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar.

It has been scientifically shown that rubbing alcohol eradicates up to 85 percent of aerobic bacterial contamination that it comes into contact with, which makes it ideal cleaner and disinfectant.

White vinegar, on the other hand, is a potent antimicrobial and antibiotic which fights off infections.

The combination of these two ingredients combats infections, breaks down earwax, dries the ear, and doesn’t cause any pain or discomfort when put in the ear. Experts recommend this remedy in cases earwax buildup or mild to moderate ear infection.  If you experience serious problems, consult a doctor.
