IMG_1335This certainly sounds strange and rude way of eating and surely many people will find it unattractive. However, this so called “rude” way of eating is much healthier and believe it or not it can protect you from certain health conditions.

Prevention of Diabetes Type 2

People who eat fast are at higher risk of developing diabetes type 2.  Generally, if you use fork and knife you eat much faster than eating with your hands. Therefore, sometimes it is better to eat “rude” whenever you can.

Moreover, you can only have a piece of chips when you eat with your hands, while with your fork you can pick up 5-6. Also, you will eat much slower with your hands than with a fork.

Digestion Improvement

It may sound strange, but eating with your fingers can improve digestion as well because when you wash your hands with soap, all the bad bacteria are removed while the good bacteria remain on your hands which can be very healthy for your gut.

Also, eating with your fingers sends signal to the brain about the food whether it is solid or soft, hot or cold, and it prepares the digestive system for digesting food.

Prevents Overeating

People who eat with hands have healthier body weight because they do not eat too much. This can be especially good for children, if their parents allow them to eat with hands of course. This is the considered as the safest way to maintain normal weight.

Moreover, people who while eating are doing something else as well, such as watching TV, eat more food than those who sit normally on table and eat.

When you eat with both hands, you are not able to do anything else meanwhile because your hands are not clean or busy. Therefore, you are focused only on the process of eating and you will know how much food you have eaten and when it is time to stop.

  1. Is this article based on any scientific studies and if so can you provide references? Also, who says eating with your hands is rude? Is his just your opinion as it is suggesting that over a quarter of the world’s population, who routinely do it, have no manners,

    1. i agree..saying that ‘eating with the hands is rude’ is so judgmental. The author should be more responsible and sensitive with what he writes.

  2. It is recommended act for a Muslim to eat with right fingers as Prophet Mohammad ( May Peace and Blessings be upon Him) used to eat with His fingers.

  3. If your fork is bigger than your hand, it is a garden fork.

If you cannot watch TV while using both hands, you are confusing your hands with your eyes.

Lastly… How do you imagine the soap distinguishes between bacteria, and can you name one of the species, given that frequently washed hands are a greater infection risk than the rectal area or an actual toilet?

    1. I thought the same things you did. No soap an distinguish between good and bad bacteria. The English in this article leaves much to be desired. People eating with both hands would eat much more than anyone with utensils. People eating at tables can eat more if dishes of food are right in front of them at arm’s reach. Healthy eating is more about what you eat, not how you eat it. This article is simplistic. I choose what to used depending on what I eat: a whole fish is easier and safer to eat with fingers to remove tiny bones, while curries need spoon and fork to enjoy the sauces. There are many more examples. Chopsticks are best for Asian food where things are cut up in bite-sized pieces for quick cooking, which is healthier. Eating fried chicken wings and drumsticks as well as fried potato sticks with your fingers is not healthy food.

  4. We people in india did not consider this to be crazy, unattractiveweird or a shame but have been adopting this right from the age of our forefathers till today.. We will not give up eating in hand and we encourage people across the globe to embrace this and shun the shame of using our hands which indeed is the correct spoon to eat food
