Researchers at the University of Michigan have discovered that black pepper combined with turmeric could play an important role in preventing and even treating many diseases, even breast cancer.
Although turmeric is a powerful and healing plant on its own, when consumed orally, it is poorly absorbed due to its rapid metabolism in the liver. Therefore, black pepper and turmeric combined together may speed up the absorption of useful compounds and prevent inflammation and infection!
Recent studies have found that a compound in black pepper, which is called piperine, participates in the fight against cancer combined with turmeric and makes the curcumin in turmeric as much as 1,000 times easier to absorb. Without piperine, bioavailability of turmeric is very low. In a study published in the Breast Cancer Research and Treatment journal, researchers found that curcumin and piperine, when combined, have the ability to destroy cancer stem cells.

Piperine and curcumin are compounds which influence more than 700 genes, and they can prevent the synthesis and activity of the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) and 5-lipooxygenase (5-LOX), as well as other enzymes that are involved in the inflammatory process.
Turmeric and black pepper can help you lose weight. The piperine in black pepper speeds up the metabolism and increases the number of calories burned in the body. It also triggers a sensation of fullness.
Active compounds in both turmeric and black pepper have anti-depressant effects. These compounds can raise the levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain and prevent the action of monoamine oxidase, an enzyme that is associated with depression, if present in the brain in high levels.
