Skin & Hair Detox Tips: On a Budget

Mathews McGarryHealthy Skin, Uncategorized0 Comments

Our skin and hair are constantly exposed to harmful influences from outside, and the fact that we mistreat them often with various products and styling does not help either. All of this leaves them damaged and filled with toxins. Sounds bad, right? I know, but it is not the end of the world. You can cleanse your hair and skin and wash away all those toxins. You probably think that will cost you a fortune at beauticians and in cosmetic shops, but it does not have to be that way. Here, I will share some of the bulletproof ways to detox your skin and hair without spending a month’s worth salary.

Change Your Habits

Let us start with the least obvious and the most difficult step you can take in order to flush out the toxins from your skin and hair – changing your lifestyle. This means that first you should get rid of the bad habits which have negative impact on them – smoking, drinking alcohol, consuming excessive amounts of caffeine and refined sugar, eating processed and “junk” food, etc. Instead of them, introduce good habits: drinking between 8 and 10 glasses of water, consuming green tea, eating fruits and vegetables (dark berries, grapes, broccoli, avocados, etc), fish, nuts and seeds. A good night sleep is also very important for skin health.

Skin Detox Tips

Let us start your journey to a better looking you with skin. To detox your skin, first you will have to remove its dead cells. I will not recommend any expensive chemical peels for that, since exfoliation is something you can do in the comfort of your home with some basic ingredients.

  • DIY exfoliation – Note that it is important to exfoliate all the body parts that are accessible to you (legs, arms, feet, hands, neck, shoulders and face). Do this by mixing up a scrub of oatmeal, honey and sugar, or if you are feeling lazy, a simple combo of baking soda and water will do the trick.

  • Face steaming – Steaming is the best free skin treatment you will ever get. Just boil some distilled water (add lavender oil if you wish), put your head above the bowl and a towel over your head and hold for 10 minutes.

  • Dry brushing – A healthy and efficient way to clean your skin, at least according to Miranda Kerr, and she knows a thing or two about beauty. Remember to use a natural bristle brush.

  • Refresh your routine – This is a crucial step, and the only one requiring investing some money. Still, it can be very worthwhile. For instance, a while back I have discovered Dermalogica skincare products, and my skin was almost instantly revitalized. When choosing your new products, make sure they are natural, organic, and intended specifically to your skin type.

Hair Detox Tips

Moving on to your precious hair – besides the trimming of the ends which should be done every three to five months, there are some other steps to take to regain soft and glowing hair.

  • Hair Straightening 101 – If you are straightening your hair, make sure you do it rarely and with a good quality ceramic plate straightener. Make sure you use heat resistant hair products and be careful about the time you spend on one piece of hair. Use a ghd hair straightener, as they are probably the least damaging option for your lovely locks.

  • Natural hair shampoos – During the time your detox lasts (a week or more, depending on your needs) you should mix up a natural shampoo made of filtered water and baking soda for the first rinse, and for the second a combo of apple cider vinegar and filtered water.

  • Natural conditioning – After, apply a mixture of raw honey and apple cider vinegar, let it sit for a couple of minutes and rinse.

  • Essential oils – During the detox period you should avoid synthetic products and styling and stick to a completely natural routine. Some essential oils like argan and coconut can replace conditioning (and even be useful for skin moisturizing).

  • Changing the products – After the detox, you should turn to organic hair care products, and switch your shampoo, because, after a while it can become inefficient.

As you see getting your skin and hair back in shape is neither hard nor expensive, and trust me on this girls, they will not actually be back as they used to be, but they will become better, shinier and healthier than ever.
